History
Rochester's Central Auto Auction was formed in 1982 by Barrett Filer, a Rochester area born native. Originally located on Central Avenue in the city of Rochester (hence the name "Central" Auto Auction), the auction was actually a converted gas station and consisted of one lane and an average dealer consignment of about 100 vehicles. The auctions were held in the evening because most of the participating dealers were small, independent operators who were required to stay in their stores during the day. By 1984 the auction had outgrown Central Avenue and was moved to Nash Street where it expanded to 140 vehicles with two lanes. The new home allowed the dealer consignment to grow but dealer parking quickly became a concern, as the growth forced dealers to park in the city streets of Rochester during auction nights. In 1987, the auction moved to a vacant warehouse on Lyell Avenue in Rochester. Featuring five lanes and over 250 weekly vehicles, Central Auto Auction established itself as the premier facility in Rochester for wholesale automobile dealers. After nine years on Lyell Avenue, the auction was relocated to a seventeen acre site on Cairn Street, less than a mile from Rochester International Airport. Just two years later, the auction was expanded to eight lanes. Because of it's dedication to personal customer service, the auction has demonstrated continuous growth and is currently poised once a gain for additional expansion. |
